Art deserves precise words

I am Tatiana Knyazhitskaya, an art historian, curator of projects and exhibitions, and writer. For more than twenty-five years I have been studying the work of creative people — artists, architects, writers. I write about architecture and the fine arts, about stained glass and mosaics, and above all — about people in the creative professions.

My greatest love is the stained glass art of Russia. I have written dozens of articles on artistic glassmaking and several monographs, and I have created an educational resource — the portal Stained Glass in Russia. It has become the country’s largest website devoted to the subject.

Since 2019, together with fellow heritage campaigners, I have been leading the project Stained Glass of St Petersburg: An Inventory. Over several years we have surveyed hundreds of historic buildings and published four catalogue volumes, which have become an instrument of real protection for the city’s fragile heritage.

I lecture on the history of art in the city’s museums and libraries, speak at academic conferences and curate exhibitions.

The other side of my work is the written word. I write books and articles about contemporary artists, prepare texts for albums, catalogues and exhibition booklets, and review and edit manuscripts. An academic degree and museum experience allow me to speak about art with professional authority; my practice as a writer lets me speak about it vividly and clearly.
