A civic initiative to carry out a complete survey of the historic stained glass of St Petersburg created before 1917. The project began in 2019. Its curators are Tatiana Knyazhitskaya, Sergey Vasilyev, Alexandra Tesakova and Natalya Bass. Volunteers survey the city’s residential buildings to record historic stained glass and build an academic database, printed catalogues and an address map.
Over the years of its work, hundreds of buildings have been surveyed and four volumes published: Vasilyevsky Island, Petrogradsky District, Admiralteysky District and Central District. A fifth book is in preparation, devoted to the stained glass of the city’s outskirts and environs. The next task is to build a system of regular monitoring and protection for this fragile heritage.

Vladimir Swertschkoff: Life and Work
The study of the life and work of Vladimir Swertschkoff is one of my long-standing personal projects. For more than thirty years I have been collecting and researching materials on the artist, introducing archival sources and previously unknown works into scholarly circulation, and reconstructing his biography, artistic career and international connections. This work has shaped the modern scholarly understanding of Swertschkoff and restored the name of a forgotten master to the history of art.
The project develops in an international field, bringing together Russian, Finnish, German, Italian and British contexts. Its results include more than ten articles, a monograph, a Wikipedia article, an encyclopaedia entry in the Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon, exhibitions, public lectures and papers at international conferences. It is a sustained study of a single artist whose results are presented across several linguistic and national scholarly and cultural spaces.
The principal outcome of the project is the monograph The Artist Vladimir Swertschkoff: Son of Four Homelands, published in 2020. Since its publication, new archival materials and evidence have come to light that considerably broaden our understanding of the artist’s life and work. I am interested in working with a publisher prepared to bring out a revised and expanded edition of the monograph — write to me.

Gorizontum — an online platform for teaching creative practice
Gorizontum was my project of 2015–2018: an online platform for teaching the visual arts to adults and children. One of the early Russian ventures in this field, it brought together professional artists and students from different cities. The platform produced original video courses, masterclasses, lectures and live online classes. I was the project’s organiser and course designer: I developed its concept and educational programmes, invited teachers, and directed the creation of courses and the growth of its audience.
